A grade-separated cable line that runs at a steady speed the roads below it rarely hold, boarding from the empty plazas the region already has. This is where its work is shared, in the open, as it moves.
The case
Across the region's worst hours, surface traffic moves far below the number on the sign. Signals, turns, and intersections take the rest. A line that runs continuously and above the grid keeps its speed through exactly the conditions that slow a car to a crawl. The design target is a steady thirty miles an hour, a figure a driver can check against their own dashboard on the way in.
The speed is not the point on its own. The point is that it does not stop.
The stations are already there
The region is full of half-empty plazas and oversized parking fields that its cities would rather rezone than defend. A tower placed in one of those is not land taken from anyone. It is a dead corner given a reason for people to pass through it again. The line is built from the places that already lost their footfall, and it gives them a new one.
Where it starts
Not everywhere, and not at once. The first lines go where the geography already asks for them, the crossings a road handles badly and open air handles well.
What is honestly hard
This is a large idea, and we will not describe it as a small one. It will cost billions and take years, and every line below is a real reason it might not happen.
- 01Throughput, not just speed. A line has to move more people per hour than the lane of traffic it replaces. Speed is easy to show. Capacity is the number that has to be proven.
- 02The towers are visible. Cable needs clear sightlines and standing structures. Some places will not want them, and that answer has to be earned, not assumed.
- 03The ground is governed. Levees, floodways, and habitat plans decide where anything can stand. The valley is a basin, and its water rules come first.
- 04Earthquake standard. Deep alluvial soil amplifies shaking. The engineering has to hold to the strictest seismic standard there is, as a requirement, not a selling point.
